San Antonio, Texas Municipal Court Records
The municipal court in San Antonio handles more than 400,000 matters annually. In light of this caseload, court administrators have developed a robust records management structure catering to all types of searchers. Record seekers can retrieve San Antonio Municipal Court files online, by mail, over the phone, by fax, or during a courthouse visit.
Interested parties must learn who holds which record and the specific access rules instituted by each custodian. Documents managed directly by the municipal court include traffic tickets, Class C misdemeanors, ordinance violations, and active warrants. Other records, especially divorce and marriage records, are maintained by county and district courts.
Are San Antonio Municipal Court Records Public?
Yes. Judicial precedent in Texas has long established the principle that court proceedings are public. While there is no provision in Texas law that specifically requires citizens to be given access to municipal court records, court clerks generally treat requests to inspect or copy records as permissible under the common-law right of access.
Even so, municipal court staff typically do not release records related to juveniles or minor defendants under Tex. Code Crim. Proc. art. 45A.462, as long as the offense is a fine-only misdemeanor. Confidential information within a public record is treated much the same as any record expunged under Tex. Code Crim. Proc. art. 55A.

Search by Name or Case Number
The San Antonio Municipal Court Case Search is relatively stringent compared to the typical database. Whether searching by name, citation number, or docket number, the required information must be provided in full. For example, the last name, first name, and date of birth are required for a name search. The system does not allow partial searches or searching by last name only.
Case information consists of the defendant's name, citation number, charge or offense, offense date, warrant number (if applicable), disposition date, and fine amount payable or paid.
If the record does not yet exist or has been removed from the system, the search returns a "No results found" error message. At that point, the searcher can call the main phone line for guidance or, if a resident, inquire directly in person.
